8 Good Tips On Writing A Harvard Style Research Paper

The Harvard formatting style is similar to the American Psychological Association (APA) formatting style. It has many of the same characteristics but is not so direct and specific. You do have to follow these simple instructions to make it easy to read but it is definitely more lax. Here are some tips on how to write your paper in this format.

  1. Use Times New Roman font size 12
  2. This style is really easy to read. There are not any characters that are hard to understand. The twelve point font is the smallest font that is easy to read so that you can get as much of the information on the page and still make it legible.

  3. Include title page
  4. You will include a title page. It should list the name of the paper, your name, the course name, and the date. There are no specific instructions on where these need to be but many people will put them in the center of the page.

  5. Use of credible sources
  6. You will need to use books and journals rather than online encyclopedias and web sites. You may also want to choose peer reviewed articles. These are ones that have been read and edited by other professionals in the field.

  7. Specific citation
  8. The direct quotes that you will add to your text will need to be distinguished from the rest of the paper by being surrounded by quotation marks. You should also include the last name of the author and the publication date in parenthesis after the quote. Ex: “this is a direct quote,” (Last name, Publication date).

  9. Inclusion of works cited page or bibliography
  10. Your sources should be alphabetized and formatted correctly for this type of paper.

  11. Letter size sheets of paper with one inch margins on all sides
  12. You will need to use a standard sheet of paper and your margins should be one inch all the way around.

  13. Header including title flush left and page number flush right
  14. Your header will include the title on the left and the page number on the right. This will be at the top of every page.

  15. Double space
  16. Your entire paper will be double spaced. The only time you would use a single space is if you were quoting a large amount of information which will be indented and single spaced.
